Pedro Coronel distanced himself from the pictorial trends of the national sphere from the 1960s onwards to take a more personal path, to which his prolonged stays abroad undoubtedly contributed. He resided in Paris and Rome for almost two years. Upon his return to Mexico, he presented an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, where part of this series was on display and in which critics were able to admire this personal change where the work shows a forgetfulness of textures, the use of smooth planes, a strong experience of color that flows without ties or anecdotal intentions, a much more spatial painting, without perspectives or superficial deceptions. After having developed as a great colorist in previous years, he produced works that, without marking periods, were divided into two ways of expression; that of juxtaposed smooth planes that construct ideal images and that of planes of rough textures that added sensuality to the forms. This, in combination with the humanist themes in his production such as the frequent insinuation of death, as well as the world of the stars, led to the works he produced at the end of the sixties in Italy, composed of multi-colored planes with no concern for textures, smooth and clear and cut-out shapes. As his creative stages progressed, he established himself as a painter of a cosmic reality, finding in it the symbolic nature.
